Ian and Lorraine produced their first dog roll in Ruawai, New Zealand. A butcher by trade, Ian had recognised the growing problem of hydatids through feeding uncooked meat to dogs. He created the dog roll as a safer and healthier alternative.
Ian travelled to Auckland on Friday's where he sold his product to farmers, butchers and small markets. By 1964 they were producing 300 dog rolls per week. One Friday, when returning from Auckland, Ian was horrified to find his factory engulfed in flames. All of the equipment and stock was destroyed, the factory burnt to the ground. They had no insurance. Soon after, Ian and Lorraine moved to Auckland with their three children where they re-built their lives.
